# Keyboard shortcuts

Faylee's shortcuts let you capture without opening the toolbar popup. That matters most for a bug that only shows for a moment, and for recordings where the popup would get in the way.

## Capture shortcuts

These work in any tab Faylee can capture.

| Action | Windows, Linux, ChromeOS | Mac |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Start or finish a recording | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>V</kbd> | <kbd>Control</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>V</kbd> |
| Save an instant replay | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>I</kbd> | <kbd>Control</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>I</kbd> |
| Take a screenshot of the visible area | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>S</kbd> | <kbd>Control</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>S</kbd> |
| Pause or resume the recording | Not set | Not set |

The recording shortcut starts a recording with the options you chose last in the popup: the tab or a screen, the microphone, the camera and the countdown. While Chrome's picker or the countdown is showing, it calls the recording off. While a recording runs, it finishes it and opens the review.

Pause has no key by default, because Chrome lets an extension suggest at most four. Set one yourself as described below.

### Why a Mac uses Control

On a Mac, <kbd>Option</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd> and a letter types a special character, so the capture shortcuts use <kbd>Control</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd> instead. Chrome writes them as ⌃⇧V, ⌃⇧I and ⌃⇧S.

## Changing the keys

Chrome manages extension shortcuts. To change them:

1. Open `chrome://extensions/shortcuts`, or click **Change shortcuts** under **Keyboard shortcuts** in Faylee's settings.
2. Find Faylee and click the pencil next to the shortcut you want to change.
3. Press the new keys.

You can also choose whether each shortcut works only in Chrome or everywhere on your computer. Faylee's settings and the toolbar popup always show the keys that are actually set, so they stay right after you change them. A shortcut without a key shows as "Not set".

:::note
If a shortcut does nothing, another extension may already use those keys. Chrome binds a suggested key only when it is free. Check `chrome://extensions/shortcuts` and set a different one.

## Keys on the page while recording

While a recording runs, these keys work on the recorded page. On a Mac they use <kbd>Option</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>, written ⌥⇧, since they match the physical key.

| Action | Windows, Linux, ChromeOS | Mac |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Draw on the page | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>D</kbd> | <kbd>Option</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>D</kbd> |
| Blur part of the page | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>B</kbd> | <kbd>Option</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>B</kbd> |
| Suggest a change | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>E</kbd> | <kbd>Option</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>E</kbd> |
| Float the controls | <kbd>Alt</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>F</kbd> | <kbd>Option</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>F</kbd> |

Pressing a tool's keys again puts it away. They do nothing while you are typing in a field, so they never get in the way of text. These keys are fixed and cannot be changed. See [Drawing, blurring and suggesting](https://faylee.app/docs/capture/recording-tools.md).

## Other keys

| Key | Where | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Countdown | Calls the recording off |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Draw, Blur or Suggest a change | Puts the tool away and gives the page back |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Selecting an area for a screenshot | Cancels, and nothing is saved |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Review over the page | Closes it and keeps the capture as a draft |
| <kbd>Tab</kbd> | Empty **What went wrong?** field in the review | Uses the drafted description |
| <kbd>Enter</kbd> | A field in the **Suggest a change** panel | Applies the change |
