# The assistant

The assistant is Claude, by Anthropic, reading your recordings. When it is on, it reads each new recording after upload and writes up what went wrong, what was expected, the likely cause and where to look. Anyone in the workspace can then ask it questions about the recording.

The assistant section sits under the media on the recording page, above the comments. Only workspace members see it. People who open a share link or an embed don't.

## Turning it on

The assistant is off until a workspace admin turns it on.

1. Open **Settings**, then **Assistant**.
2. Turn on **Use the assistant in this workspace**.

The same page lists what is sent to Anthropic:

- The steps, console output, network requests and socket messages of each recording, after the browser redacted them.
- The page addresses, browser details and any metadata the app attached.
- The title and description the reporter wrote, and the questions your team asks.

The video itself is not sent unless you turn on frames, below. Secrets are hidden in the browser before a recording is uploaded, so the assistant never sees them. See [Privacy and redaction](https://faylee.app/docs/workspace/privacy.md).

### Admin switches

The Assistant settings page has three switches. Each change is recorded in the [audit log](https://faylee.app/docs/workspace/security#audit-log).

| Switch | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Use the assistant in this workspace** | Turns the analysis and questions on or off for everyone in the workspace. |
| **Let Claude see frames from videos** | Sends a grid of stills from each video with the analysis. This helps with layout and visual bugs. Blurred fields stay blurred. Available only while the assistant is on. |
| **Transcribe narration in videos** | Sends the audio of each video to a transcription service, so the assistant reads what the reporter said and the viewer can show captions. |

When the assistant is off, its section on the recording page is collapsed and says so.

## The analysis

Once a recording is uploaded, the assistant reads it and writes an analysis with these parts:

- **A title** for the problem. A recording that has no title takes this one.
- **A summary** of what happened.
- **What happened**, the actual behavior.
- **Expected**, what should have happened instead.
- **Likely cause**.
- **Where to look**, up to four next steps.
- **Key moments**, up to six, each with a time.

Every time the analysis mentions, and every key moment, is a link. Click it and the player jumps there, with the console, network and steps beside it.

While the analysis runs, the section says that Claude is reading the recording. When it finishes, **Analyze again** runs it once more. If it failed, the section shows why and offers **Try again**. A recording that was uploaded while the assistant was off shows **Analyze this recording**.

The assistant also knows earlier recordings in your workspace that failed in the same way, with their analyses and linked issues. When one looks like the same bug, it says so.

The analysis is also used elsewhere. An issue you file in a tracker from the recording includes its findings, and **Copy a prompt for a coding agent** includes them too.

## Asking questions

Under the analysis, type a question into **Ask about this recording, like why the request failed** and press **Ask**, or press `Enter`. `Shift` and `Enter` adds a new line. A question can be up to 2000 characters.

The assistant answers from the capture data. It remembers your earlier questions on the same recording, so you can ask follow-ups. Times in an answer are links into the player, like those in the analysis.

:::note
Questions are private. Each person sees only their own questions and answers, even on the same recording. The analysis is shared with everyone in the workspace.

## Transcription

When **Transcribe narration in videos** is on, Faylee transcribes what the reporter said in each new video recording before the analysis runs. The assistant then reads the narration alongside the capture, as what the reporter said at each moment.

On the recording page, the transcript shows in two places:

- As captions over the video. The **Captions** toggle in the player controls hides them.
- Under **Transcript**, folded beneath the assistant section. It lists each line with its time, follows playback, and has a **Search what was said** box. Click a line to jump to it. When the transcription service gives word timings, you can click a single word, and the word being spoken is highlighted.

Speech also splits the timeline into chapters, at the point where the reporter starts talking again after a pause. See [The viewer](https://faylee.app/docs/viewer/overview#chapters).

A video recorded before transcription was on has **Transcribe the narration** under Transcript, which transcribes it on demand. A video with no speech says that nobody spoke.

## Similar recordings

Faylee notes the failures in each recording, such as the errors and failed requests. When other recordings in your workspace failed in some of the same ways, the recording page shows a button such as **2 similar** next to its status. It lists those recordings, those sharing the most failures first, with the keys of any issues already filed for them. A recording reported twice is often the same bug, and the issue may already exist.

Similar recordings work whether or not the assistant is on.

## Drafts in the extension

When the assistant is on, the extension drafts a title and description for a capture before you share it. You can keep the draft, edit it, or write your own. **Settings**, **Assistant** shows what reporters did with the drafts over the last 30 days: **Kept as drafted**, **Kept and edited**, or **Written from scratch**.
