Faylee connects to Slack in two ways. An incoming webhook posts each new recording to one channel and does nothing else. The Slack app posts new recordings too, and also keeps a thread for each one, turns replies in that thread into comments, messages people who are mentioned, unfurls recording links, and lets anyone share a recording to a channel.

Both are under Settings, Integrations, in the Notifications group. Only workspace admins can connect them.

Use the incoming webhook if you only want a feed of new recordings. Use the Slack app for everything else.

With one-click connect, click Connect on the Slack app card, sign in to Slack and allow Faylee. Back in Faylee, Finish setting up Slack app asks for the channel new recordings go to. Faylee lists the public channels the app is in, so invite the app to the channel in Slack first.

The app asks Slack for these permissions:

chat:write, channels:read, channels:history, links:read, links:write, users:read, users:read.email

If one-click connect isn’t offered, or you’d rather run your own app, choose Use an API key (or Connect when it is the only button) and fill in:

FieldValue
Bot tokenFrom an app you create at api.slack.com with the permissions above, installed to your workspace. It starts with xoxb-.
Signing secretOn the app’s Basic Information page
Channel IDThe channel new recordings go to, such as C0123456789. Invite the app to the channel first.

Connecting posts a short message to the channel to check it works:

Faylee is connected. New recordings from this workspace will be posted here.

The card then shows an address for Slack’s events. In your Slack app, under Event Subscriptions, set it as the Request URL and subscribe to the bot events message.channels and link_shared. Under App unfurl domains, add Faylee’s domain. Without this, replies don’t come back and links don’t unfurl.

On the Slack card, click Connect and paste an Incoming webhook URL from Slack. Connecting posts the same short message to check the webhook works.

An incoming webhook can only send, so Faylee can’t check it quietly. If the webhook stops working, posts to it fail.

Every new recording in the workspace is posted to the connected channel once it is ready. The message shows the recording’s title linked to its share link, who made it, and what went wrong, such as the number of errors and failed requests. A recording without a title uses its page address.

With the Slack app, the message Faylee posts starts a thread that belongs to the recording.

  • Replies become comments. A reply in the thread is added to the recording as a comment under the person’s Slack name, and notifies people the way any comment does. Edits, deletions and messages from bots are left alone.
  • Comments go to the thread. A comment made in Faylee is posted in the thread with its author’s name.
  • Filed issues are noted. When someone files an issue from the recording, the thread gets a reply such as “Filed as ENG-142” with a link to the issue.

When someone is mentioned in a comment on a recording, the Slack app sends them a direct message with the comment and a link to it. Faylee finds the person in Slack by their email address, so it only works when their Faylee and Slack accounts use the same email.

When someone posts a link to one of your workspace’s recordings in a channel the app is in, Slack shows the recording’s title, who made it, and what went wrong under the link. Links to recordings from other workspaces don’t unfurl.

On a recording’s page, open Send to app and choose Share to Slack…. Pick a channel and click Share. The list holds the public channels the Faylee app is in. If it is empty, invite the app to a channel in Slack first.

The shared message starts its own thread, and replies there arrive as comments on the recording, the same as for new recordings.
